Melbourne has something for everyone, whether it be fine dining and theatre, funky bars and live music, shopping for designer labels or sifting through vintage stores, taking in any number of sporting events, or just sipping on a latte and watching it all unfold in front of you.
Waves of migration from all parts of the world, dating back to the gold rush in the latter half of the 19th century, after WWII and continuing since have ensured that Melbourne is one of the most cosmopolitan societies in the world. While not as naturally aesthetic as some other cities, the heady days of the gold rush helped create a rich vein of architecture that, along with tree-lined boulevards and a generous smattering of beautiful parklands across the inner city contributes to a vibrant European feel. The influx of migrants also helped create a dynamic restaurant and cafe scene, with influences from all over the world meaning authentic regional dishes or modern Australian fare are readily available for any palate or wallet size.
Until fairly recently most of the action in Melbourne was to be found in the surrounding ring of inner suburbs, each with their own particular scene and feel. That thankfully has changed with the revitalised South Bank, a focus on inner city living has meant the city itself is now a hub of activities round the clock, with any number of funky bars and restaurants flourishing down hidden laneways where some of the fun is actually finding it!
You can easily get caught up with enjoying life in Melbourne, yet there is plenty to see just around the corner. The breathtaking trip down the Great Ocean Rd is a must, taking in some of the finest surf beaches going, as well as the Twelve Apostles (well, eight of them anyway). Take as trip back in time to the days of the gold rush at Ballarat’s Sovereign Hill, and then venture a little further to see the wonders of the Grampians National Park.
On the other side of town, on your way out to sample a few vinos in the charming Yarra Valley a short detour will take you to Healesville Wildlife Sanctuary to see all sorts of Australia’s wildlife, and hop aboard the steam driven Puffing Billy taking you through the winding hills. And no visit to Melbourne is complete without a trip down to Phillip Island to see the fairy penguins surfing in to strut their stuff each night.
