It is with good reason that Byron Bay is one of the first places tacked on to the list of places to go in nearly everybody’s trip to Oz. Now far removed from the utopian destination that attracted surfers and hippies back in the 60s, today it is more chic than perhaps the locals and those early travellers would have liked. While the demographics may have changed a little, unchanged is the natural beauty of the hinterlands coming tumbling down to beautiful coastal beaches where the sun hits the mainland first every day. And with beaches facing nearly every direction, you can normally find a good swell somewhere. A little way off these beaches, humpback whales can be seen migrating at the right times of year. With a fantastic climate nearly year round, it’s hard to top.
Moving to the town itself you can see evidence of the shifting community, with alternative arty folk bemoaning the loss of their bohemia while plying their wares to the backpackers, families and yuppies that flock here. This has brought about a bustling scene with upmarket hotels, restaurants and nightlife that shows no sign of slowing down soon. While Byron Bay is no longer the secret to be uncovered on the back tracker trail, everyone comes here at some point in their trip downunder.
