The astounding natural beauty and seeming isolation from the rest of the world is the draw card for most visitors to the Kimberley region. Set on the peninsula of Roebuck Bay is its (laidback) heartbeat, the township of Broome. A rich cultural past has abounded in this remote outpost; with its ancient Aboriginal heritage having lived alongside the ‘Pearl Rush’ in the 19th century, pioneered by Asian prospectors. Even more recently travellers the world over have discovered a plethora of reasons to visit Broome and its vast surrounds, and tourism along with the pearl trade is the reason behind Broome’s verve today.
No trip to Broome is complete without taking in the riot of colours at sunset, on camelback of course, along Cable Beach’s turquoise waters. And if you’re there at the right time duck back to the east side of town to see the moon rise over the mangrove flats at low tide, the Staircase to the Moon. You can also discover Broome’s pearling heritage with tours on pearl luggers, wandering through Chinatown or taking in the Japanese Cemetery.
While there is plenty of reason to visit Broome alone, it is perhaps the natural splendours beyond that beckon more. Armed with a bit of know-how, a 4WD and an appetite for adventure you can embark on the trip of a lifetime through some of the most ruggedly beautiful countryside found anywhere. Best done in the Dry (April – October) head off down the iconic Gibb River Rd towards Kununarra, stop off at the incredible Geikie and Windjana Gorges and countless other remote gorges, waterfalls and pools. Even more off the beaten track to the north are the stunning Cape Leveque on the Dampier Peninsula and Mitchell Plateau.
Whether you take in a little or all that Broome and the Kimberley have to offer you won’t forget this stunning out-of-the-way corner of the world.
