Description
Surf Coast, Lorne, Great Ocean Road & Port Campbell National Park
Join Gray Line on a full day tour to one of the most spectacular stretches of coastline that Victoria has on offer. It is hard to believe, that only a short distance from the coastal regional town of Geelong, lies over 240km of twisting and winding roads, back dropped by truly stunning scenery that hugs the oceanfront.
Your tour begins in the busy Melbourne city centre. As the coach crosses the West Gate Bridge, you will say goodbye to the towering office and residential buildings of the CBD and the container ships in Port Philip Bay, and start to see the views change to a serene coastal vista as you travel further south. The Great Ocean Road officially starts in Torquay, and as the coach follows the road west, you can gaze out the window and take in the amazing coastal landscape – from the crystal blue waters of the sea to the craggy cliffs. Morning tea is a truly Australian feast, with delights like bush billy tea, lamingtons and vegemite and crackers!
The next stop on the Great Ocean Road is the surf town of Lorne and then onto the popular beach-holiday destination for Victorians, Apollo Bay. Here, you will indulge in a mouth-watering two-course lunch at the Apollo Bay Hotel. With a full belly, it’s time to visit the Otway National Park – a lush rainforest full of tropical ferns, growing alongside native Australian plants and trees.
As the tour continues its way into Port Campbell National Park and along the ‘Shipwreck Coast’, you will see the immediately recognisable Twelve Apostles (although there are not that many left standing anymore!) jutting majestically out of the turquoise water. Here, you can even experience the beauty of the coast from a completely new perspective with a short helicopter flight (optional extra). How amazing to witness the white-crested waves crashing past the rock formations and onto the golden beach.
The next stop is the famous Lock Ard Gorge, named after the ship that ran aground on the site. Descend the steep steps and enjoy the view out through the inlet and to the ocean beyond. After exploring the Gorge, it’s time to board the coach once again and head back to Melbourne.
As you cross back over the West Gate Bridge, the twinkling evening lights of the cityscape will greet you.
