Taronga Zoo Sydney
Sydney Taronga Zoo General Admission
Description
General Admission Taronga Zoo
Stunning Taronga Zoo – located at Mosman on the shore of Sydney Harbour – was officially opened on its present site in 1916. It has undergone many changes since those early days, most notably in 1967, when a review of the site demanded a much greater emphasis on conservation, preservation, and education. Moving forward, new enclosures were developed, and a quarantine centre was built. By the mid 1980's, a gondola lift was installed that ran from the bottom of the park to the top, thus allowing easy access from the ferry that continues to bring scores of people into the park. Retaining its rustic and historical charm, Taronga Zoo today is among the best zoos in the world – with spacious natural enclosures for their exhibits, and successful breeding programmes. Notably there has been two live elephant births and successful breeding of the platypus – a truly ambitious endeavour.
Set against the backdrop of the magnificent Sydney skyline, the zoo is set amid some of Australia's most breath taking scenery. Surrounded by bushland and national park, you may take the time to amble from one exhibit to another at your leisure, or structure your visit so that you attend live shows, feedings, and educational talks – of which there are more than 20 throughout the day. Additional interactive pleasures include 'Keeper for a Day', which gives you a unique opportunity to get up close and personal in a behind the scenes adventure with the zoo's keepers. School holiday programmes are fun and plentiful, and behind the scenes tours can be arranged for a more intimate encounter with some of the zoo's beautiful animals.
With more than 2,600 animals housed over 21 hectares (52 acres), you will be delighted to discover the stunning and conservation conscious habitats of the zoo's charges both in the exhibits and on the themed trails. Marvel at the Walkabout and Rainforest Trails, the African Savannah, Reptile World, and Seal Walk to name but a few.
With world-class exhibits, exotic plants and animals, beautifully manicured walking trails, clear signage, and friendly helpful staff, this is a Sydney experience you do not want to miss.
