Description
Nura Diya – Taronga’s Aboriginal Discovery Tour
One of the most iconic and infamous sights in Sydney is Taronga Zoo. The zoo is home to hundreds of both native Australian and non-native animals, in enclosures made to replicate their natural habitats and environments. Taronga Zoo is a must-see on any itinerary of a visitor to Sydney.
Tarongo Zoo now offers the Nura Diya tour. Nura Diya means ‘this country or camp’, and is the most recently established tour available to visitors to Taronga Zoo. This 1.5 hour educational guided tour within Taronga Zoo is not simply about looking at and learning about the animals – the tour will take you around the zoo, but will also encourage you to examine the wildlife from an Indigenous perspective. The tour was developed with the consultation of Australian Indigenous people and is led by an Aboriginal guide, so it is sure to give you an incredible insight into the strong relationship our Indigenous people have with native Australian wildlife.
The tour includes all-day general admission to Taronga Zoo, as well as a return trip on the Sky Safari cable car. Don’t forget to bring your camera, so that you can capture your interactions with native birds, kangaroos, wallabies and emus. Groups are kept small, to make the tour more personal and so you can ask as many questions as you want from your guide. Your Indigenous guide will teach you about how indigenous people use native plants for food, tools and implements and medicines.
Your guide will share stories of the Dreamtime, which was a time of creation. In Aboriginal folklore, the Dreamtime occurred when the landscapes, plants and animals took their shapes and the strong bonds between people, flora and fauna were forged. You will also learn about the amazing prehistoric Wollemi Pine trees, which date back over 65 million years.
The tour stops for morning tea at Harbourview Café, where you have the chance to rest your legs and enjoy a light refreshment.
The zoo lies upon land belonging to the traditional landowners from the Cammeraigal tribe. This palpable Indigenous spiritual connection to the land – combined with magnificent views over the Sydney Harbour – really makes this adventure a memorable experience.
