Description
Majestic Kings Canyon – a sacred Indigenous site – is a stunning Australian wonderland situated in the Watarrka National Park, 323kms southwest of Alice Springs.
Departing from Ayers Rock Resort bright and early (at between four and five am) in a luxurious air conditioned coach, you will travel for a little under two hours before arriving at the Kings Creek Station. As the great outback awakens, you will witness the local wildlife starting their day; keep your eyes peeled for kangaroos, wild brumbies, dingoes, and camels as they begin their days' journey with the sunrise.
Upon arrival at the 1,800 square kilometre working cattle and camel station that is Kings Creek, enjoy a delicious home cooked breakfast or sample a mug of their freshly brewed coffee (considered the best in the Territory!) and have a chat with the friendly station hands as they go about their daily business.
A further 30-minute drive will have you arriving in the ancient land of Kings Canyon, sacred ground of the Ulpinyali and Lilla people. Soaring sandstone cliffs and lush vegetation shimmer in the early morning light of this most magical place.
You may now opt to take the memorable 6km Rim Walk, which will have you climbing a 100-metre cliff face to the rim of the canyon's soaring sandstone walls. This impressive panorama will enfold you as you continue 270 metres down into the chasm between the sandstone cliffs, to the Garden of Eden – a natural spring waterhole oasis bounded by lush native trees and exotic vegetation.
A more relaxing amble is the Creek Bed Walk. This 2km stroll follows the rocky creek bed through visionary terrain to views of the imposing canyon rim.
Next stop is Kings Canyon Resort – an oasis in the middle of the Red Centre! Treat yourself to a delicious lunch (own expense) and take a swim in the resort's pool, or take an optional scenic helicopter flight over this spectacular panorama to witness the ancient landscape from a different perspective.
Relax and enjoy the spellbinding scenery of Australia's mystical Red Centre as you return home to the Ayers Rock Resort.
