Its beach is small and the sea is inhabited by marine stingers, the box jellyfish, during the summer rainy season (October - March). In order to provide somewhere for the travelling visitors to swim a swimming lagoon was built on the foreshore, similar to the lagoon found in Cairns. During the dry season (April - September) Airlie Beach is alive and kicking with thousands of eager tourists chomping at the bit to check out the magical wonders of the surrounding islands. Island day tours and sailing trips departing Airlie Beach are some of the best on offer anywhere in the world. Skydiving and other adventure activities are also very popular.
